The Importance of the Vertical Line

The Importance of the Vertical Line

In reading a recent article from Larry Lohrman, one of the most important aspects about shooting real estate photos is making sure your vertical lines, stay vertical. Here is a short excerpt from Larry’s “The 10 Essentials of real Estate Photography”:

Render all verticals vertical: Every vertical line (walls, cabinets etc) in real life MUST be shown parallel to the sides of the image so it appears vertical; if walls don’t appear vertical they unnecessarily distract the viewer’s attention. Making walls straight does not require expensive equipment; it can easily be done with photo-editing.

It’s interesting to see how many times a real estate agent would take their own listing photos, and completely ignore the fact that their “vertical” walls appear not vertical. As a professional photographer, we must do whatever we can to make sure the property is portrayed in the best light. So use a plugin, or standalone program to correct your barrel distortion, whatever needs to be done to make those lines vertical. And of course using the Internet’s Best Virtual Tour Software helps a bit too!!!
