When choosing an individual or an agency to photograph your hotel, you should ask for examples of their work. Hotel photography is about spaces, how they relate to one another, and how they make you feel when you’re in them. Good hotel photographers will be able to make small spaces feel spacious and understand how to use their equipment, natural light, and processing to bring out the best of any hotel room. While you may be drawn to use a hotel photographer that you know, keep in mind that many hospitality corporations require the use of a qualified vendor. Ask your regional director or corporate office for an approved vendor list to be sure you are procuring images from an approved company. It can be upsetting to find out that the images you have paid for are not eligible to be published on a corporate website.
Not sure where to look for hotel photographers? Since the technical aspects of hotel photography is different from portraiture, it may be challenging to find a photographer with the right skill set. Speak with a local real estate office and ask if they could recommend a good real estate photographer to photograph your hotel. Most realtors work with photographers to get professional images of the properties they are listing so this is a great place to start!
It is common for the hotel photographer to give their clients a license to use the images and not grant them ownership of the photographs. Ownership of the images is different from being granted permission to use the images. Talk to your photographer or photography company about all of the ways in which you plan to use the images, make sure they agree to license the photos for those uses and get it in writing. Ownership and licensing for images resulting from the photo shoot should be spelled out in your contract with the photographer prior to your photography shoot.
